History:Seto Kaiba – Present Life
Priest Seto – Past Life
Personality:
The first thing everyone learns about Kaiba is that he's an arrogant asshole. Kaiba does not have a high opinion of other people, and he's okay with everyone knowing that. He won't go out of his way to tell someone that they're worthless, that would be giving them too much thought. However, if they try to talk to him like they're anything resembling equals he'll let them know exactly why that's not the case. He holds everyone to a high standard because he holds himself to an even higher standard of perfection. He's a genius and the CEO of a successful multi-national gaming corporation while still in high school – he is just better than you.
It is possible to get him to admit that you're not a complete waste of space, but it's not easy. He doesn't want to make friends. Allies are okay, but friends come with too many expectations and baggage. In order to be an ally, you first need to earn his respect which can be incredibly difficult. To get his respect, you have to not only show that you're worth something but also have an air that you don't actually need his respect. Your reward for winning his respect is being held to the same even higher standard he holds for himself…good luck with that.
Even harder to earn than his respect is his loyalty, but once someone has it, it is unfaltering. At the moment only his brother Mokuba, the Blue Eyes White Dragon, and Yugi have his loyalty. Though he'll only admit to the first two. He'll kill himself to protect his brother. Anything his brother wants, within reason, he will find a way to get it for him. Even though the Blue Eyes White Dragon is just a card, Kaiba feels a connection to them. He has to think twice before sacrificing them in a duel, even if it would help him win. If his opponent takes control of, destroys, or otherwise limits his Blue Eyes White Dragon it is viewed as a personal affront and Kaiba will destroy his opponent in order to get his dragon back. With Yugi, he won't admit that he's earned his loyalty but there's no one else he'll willingly duel with on the same side. He'll still be an asshole to him, but that's because Yugi is being held to his own high standards and he's an asshole to himself too.
Allies can ask for help, and he'll assist if it benefits him. That's what allies are for, a give and take. Those he's loyal to, will always get what they ask for even if he doesn't get a personal benefit. However, being that nice to anyone (outside of Mokuba) makes him uncomfortable so he'll be a bigger ass about it. For example; in Battle City, Kaiba wanted to duel Yugi, but Yugi needed to find his friends first. An ally would have been told he'd help after he got his duel. Even though Kaiba complained about it being a waste of time, and that he was only traveling with Yugi to bait the rare hunters, he also had Mokuba searching for Jounochi using the Kaiba Corporation's satellites. Not that Yugi was told that until Mokuba was successful. He won't promise something to someone whose opinion actually matters to him unless he's 100% sure he can deliver it. Otherwise he can let them down, and being anything less than perfect is unacceptable.
The flip side of holding himself to such a high standard of perfection is that it makes him self-destructive. Any failure is an unforgivable sin. Beat him at a game once and he'll follow you forever until he proves it was a fluke (just ask Yugi). Being perfect and winning is more important than his life. Eating, sleeping, any other human requirement – all less important than his company or Duel Monsters. During Duelist Kingdom he almost completely failed to save his brother, and he responded by trying to kill himself. He also is the first to sacrifice himself for a win. As long as he wins, it doesn't matter what happened to him along the way. While he's grown, and is actually trying to take Yugi's advice of letting go of his anger to heart - he still believes it's not how you play the game, it's whether you win or lose. He cheats far less than he used to, and wouldn't do so in a card game. However out-thinking your opponent and winning in a way they didn't expect (and may not be entirely within the rules) isn't cheating. A real rival would have seen it coming.
If it hasn't come through in his other main traits yet, Kaiba is also a bit obsessive. His life revolves around Duel Monsters and the Blue Eyes White Dragon. He transformed a former weapons company into a gaming company that focuses on Duel Monsters and Duel Monsters based theme parks. If he can put a Blue Eyes White Dragon on it, he'll put a Blue Eyes White Dragon on it (Statues, roller coasters, a jet
Inventory:
In addition to the clothes on his back, Kaiba will arrive with his briefcase containing: his laptop, main deck, spare cards, and duel disk.
Abilities:
Most of Kaiba's abilities are intellectual. On top of being a child genius, he went through years of extensive training to take over Kaiba Corporation. He's able to speak multiple languages at least conversationally. While they don't go into specifics in the manga, he runs a multi-national corporation and was seen reading Nietzsche, so I assume he can speak/read at least Japanese, English, German, and Mandarin. His training also included pilot lessons and he's able to fly both helicopters and jets.
He is a gaming master and holds the number one position of any game he plays (unless Yugi also plays, in which case he holds the number 2 position). He's a chessmaster, and sneaky enough to get away with cheating with other chess masters.
Kaiba is an inventor and computer genius. His biggest accomplishment is creating Solid Vision - holograms that are so life-like it's hard to believe they aren't real. He's able to create and improve items very quickly. Within 1 year he took Solid Vision from being confined to a duel box, to a two-part duel disk, to a one-part duel disk, and 6 months of that year was spent in a coma.
A physical ability is that somehow Kaiba is able to use trading cards as a weapon. He can use them to jam guns or throw them hard enough to embed in someone's skin and make them bleed.
On the more mystical side, Kaiba is connected to his past life as the high priest Seto (see history section). In his current life this causes occasional flashbacks, the ability to read Ancient Egyptian and a strong connection his cards, especially the Blue Eyes White Dragon (who was actually a woman who died for him). Unless the Millenium rod shows up in game, none of the other more vaguely explored powers will occur.
Flaws:
Most, if not all of the flaws were already covered in his personality. But that personality is actually Kaiba-Lite or Kaiba after several years of mellowing. His ego, obsessiveness, flair for the dramatic and self-destruction was so bad in the past that he tried to kill Yugi, Yugi's grandpa and all of his friends through an elaborately staged amusement attraction (see Death T in history section).
But he doesn't do that anymore after Yugi destroyed his evil part and made him rebuild his heart. Now he'll just do things like:
- Toss men out of a helicopter into the open ocean for betraying him
- Hold men hostage at gun point while threatening to snap another one's neck
- Try to kill himself if he's not able to protect his brother
- Go on rant, after rant, after rant about how much better he is than everyone else in the world
- Rant about how he's better than God and Destiny
- Did I mention he likes to rant about his superiority and be very, very, very, arrogant?
So, while he's no longer evil, he's still got issues.
SAMPLES
Action Log Sample:
(Using scenario one from Test Drive Meme #30 - which I missed *sob*)
[Kaiba's first thought was that the plant was Solid Vision. It made the most sense. Solid Vision holograms were always being tested at Kaiba Corporation. The Mario theme was odd, but not out of the question if some upstart tech decided it would be a fun joke. Too bad for them that their waste of company resources and time decided to snap at the CEO. He was already annoyed by not being entirely certain where he was. It would have taken a team to make this entire fake façade, and they were all going to pay for that mistake.
He took a step closer to examine the realism in the movements. Maybe he wouldn't fire whoever made it if they begged enough.]
If you were trying to impress me, you failed. Turn the simulation off now and I might decide this didn't happen.
[That seemed to be the signal to attack, as the plant suddenly lunged forward snapping at him. Kaiba jumped back and raised his briefcase in reflex. The snap missed him, but snagged the corner of the metal. His frown stayed frozen but his eyes widened as he registered the impact from the hit. Holograms, even his Solid Vision, couldn't affect the world around them. That raised several questions. Was it a hologram? Was it like in the Battle City finals when some of the monsters had actually seemed to cause harm? Why that form? Who was behind it? He was going to get those answers, but first he had to deal with the immediate problem. The plant was still snapping and trying to reach him. He narrowed his eyes as he considered his options. The obvious structural weak point was the vine, but he didn't have anything to cut it with. He spoke to the person he assumed was controlling this phantom to buy more time.]
You think your weed impresses me?
[Looks at the damage to his briefcase. No structural damage, so whatever it was made of was weaker than the metal. Plan made, he stood to his full height, briefcase at his side and scoffed.]
Hmpf, you scratched my case.
[He waited until the next snap of the plant's sharp teeth. As soon as it stopped moving, he swung his briefcase aiming straight for the row of sharp white fangs. There was a satisfying crunching noise as the briefcase went entirely through its mouth and pieces of fang fell on the floor.
The plant swayed as it didn't seem to know what to do, and then retreated to the pipe. It wasn't dead, but it was defeated, and that was good enough for Kaiba. It was an annoyance. The person controlling it was his target. He walked past the wounded plant without looking at it. He had answers to find. Once he found out who was behind this, they were going to pay.]
